Visiting Faculty

  • "CUPL is a great university. The faculty, administration and students have all been very welcoming and helpful. They have done everything they can to ensure that my stay is comfortable and my focus can be on learning as much as possible about the history, language, culture and laws of this amazing and highly diverse country. CUPL is a very international university. Staff and students are here from all over the world. Most Chinese faculty have studied overseas, speak more than one language and are eager to learn about all countries. I have every confidence that CUPL will continue to prosper and grow to be one of the world's great universities."

  • I can say without exaggeration “I’ve grown some roots in China.” I come from California USA. But after stepping off an airplane at Beijing International Airport in 2005 with three suitcases, two of them filled with books, a taxi ride to Changping District, and now looking back more than seven years later, I ask myself the question “can I call this place home?” It is said “home is where the heart is” So what is in my heart? To answer I must look within.
I love the great outdoors. Back in California I would spend much of my leisure time hiking, mountain biking and camping in the majestic redwood forests of my hometown. I am a seasoned outdoorsman, an artist and a dreamer.
My life in China is about dedication to my work as an English teacher and caring for my family. I love my wife and son and want the best I can give them. I accept the responsibility of being a teacher, a father and a husband.
Changping, a suburb that is a distance away from the big city with the excellent Fa Da university and beckoning hills to the north, has great resemblance to my home back in California. Home is where the heart is. If you find my penjing garden then you have found my heart. The place I love and enjoy my work and family life. Changping, Beijing, China is the place I now call home.

  • I was a wanderer between two worlds: the world of universities and the world of courts. However, the times I spent as a professor at universities were only an interlude in a life that was basically the life of a judge. For eleven years I was the president of the Labour Appeal Court of Schleswig-Holstein (Germany). From 2000 till 2006 I worked as a judge at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. In 2007 I was asked whether I could imagine becoming the European Co-Dean of a “Europe-China School of Law” to be established in Beijing as a joint project of the European Union and the People’s Republic of China with the support of a large consortium of European and Chinese universities. I did not hesitate one second to agree. The new law school, now named “China-EU School of Law”, was integrated in the China University of Political Science and Law. Thus CUPL became my Chinese home university. The aspect of CUPL that impressed me most is its emphasis on human rights. It is already visible in the choice of art on the Changping campus. There is a monument with the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the little park near the sports grounds, and on a bas-relief in the Mingfa building you can e.g. read part of the Declaration of the Rights of Men and of the Citizen from the time of the French Revolution. The CUPL Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law has promoted human rights by numerous measures the impact of which extends far beyond this university. Another aspect that impressed me very much is CUPL’s openness to ideas from other parts of the world. Great personalities of legal and political history are represented on the campus regardless of their nationality. What I enjoyed most about my time at CUPL was that we were able to build up a relationship of trust. I still remember how suspicious I was during the first meetings with my Chinese colleagues at CUPL, and it will have been the same on their side. I really appreciated that I was finally awarded the prize of the CUPL president because this showed that we had become friends.

  • Since 2008, American lawyer and law professor Stephen ("Steve") Barnes has been teaching U.S. Constitutional Law, American Law and Culture, and International Law to CUPL graduate law students and undergraduate international relations students. "I'm fortunate to work with such devoted students, " Steve remarks. "I emphasize case analysis, and my students spend a lot of time preparing group presentations. However, our most memorable learning experiences occur during informal weekly dinners, where we discuss whatever is on my students' minds: cases, legal systems, culture, current events, and career aspirations."
